Wen Jiabao Meets with Angolan Prime Minister Fernando

On the afternoon of June 20, 2006, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Angolan Prime Minister Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos in Luanda, capital of Angola.

Wen made positive comments on bilateral relations. He said that China and Angola are countries with fraternal friendship and during Angola's struggle for national independence, the Chinese people offered the Angolan people resolute moral and material support and established with them a profound friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, both countries have conducted effective cooperation in the areas of politics, economy and trade, helping them become important cooperative partners. During this visit, Wen reached consensus with the Angolan leader on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in regional affairs and both sides also signed a series of cooperation agreements. China is wiling to make joint efforts with Angola to continuously deepen their friendly cooperation in all areas.

Wen noted that China has always adhered to the following three principles in bilateral economic cooperation. First, cooperation should be conducive to improving Angola's overall economic strength. Angola is under its post-war reconstruction with everything waiting to be taken up. Both sides can make use of their respective advantages to focus on cooperation in the fields of energy, infrastructure construction, agriculture and fishery. Second, cooperation should be beneficial for Angola to grasp advanced technology. China stands ready to help Angola to enhance its capability for self-improvement by ways of technological transfer and personnel training. Third, cooperation should be conducive to Angola's sustainable development and bring benefits to its people.

Fernando noted that Angola deems China an important cooperative partner and its reconstruction needs support and assistance from China. Bilateral cooperation is mutually beneficial and the Angolan government will firmly pursue its policy of enhancing friendly cooperation with China.

On the same day, Premier Wen also visited the Luanda General Hospital funded by the Chinese government and the Chinese Embassy in Angola and met with the staff the Embassy and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions.
