Jia Qinglin Meets with Afghan President Karzai

On June 20, 2006, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the Great Hall of the People.

Jia said that both countries have always been friendly neighbors that treat each other sincerely and show mutual understanding and respect. Since the establishment of the new Afghan government, bilateral relations have been progressing continuously with fruitful cooperation in all areas. The heads of state of the two countries reached important consensus on developing Sino-Afghan comprehensive partnership and signed the treaty of good-neighborliness and friendly cooperation yesterday, helping lay a consolidated political and legal basis for long-term and steady growth of bilateral friendly relations and cooperation. China is willing to work with Afghanistan to earnestly implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state with a views to pushing bilateral ties and mutually beneficial cooperation to a new level and promoting friendship between both countries and their people for generations to come. Jia thanked for Afghanistan's precious support on Taiwan, counter-terrorism and other questions, indicating that China will continue to support Afghanistan's efforts in safeguarding sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and advancing national reconstruction and economic growth.

Jia noted that the CPPCC, which is composed of representatives from all parties, groups, nationalities and all walks of life, holds an important status and influence in China' political and social life. The CPPCC is ready to conduct all kinds of cooperation with the Afghan parliament and people from all social circles to contribute to the traditional friendship between the two peoples and all-round and in-depth development of bilateral good-neighborly relations and friendly cooperation.

Karzai said that his current visit to China is aimed to further the existing friendly relations and cooperation between both countries. He reached important consensus with President Hu Jintao on this point yesterday and the visit has achieved a great success. Karzai noted that China has scored enormous achievements in economic growth and is playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. Strengthening bilateral friendly relations and cooperation is conducive to both countries, as well as to peace and common development of this region. Afghanistan thanks for China's long-standing support and help and stands ready to learn from China's development experience and enhance exchanges and cooperation with China in all areas.
