Li Zhaoxing Meets with Indian Defence Minister

On May 29, 2006, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with visiting Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the office building of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Li indicated that both China and India are countries with ancient civilizations and the gross population of the two countries is slightly more than one third of the world total. The development and prosperity of both sides will be an enormous contribution to the world. China attaches great importance to developing cooperative relations of good-neighborly friendship with India and would like to take the "China-India Friendship Year" as an opportunity to push for all-round and in-depth development of bilateral strategic cooperative partnership.

Mukherjee noted that both sides are good friends and share identical or similar views on many issues. It is conducive to safeguarding world peace, stability and development for the two countries to strengthen cooperation and actively participate in international affairs. India would like to make joint efforts with China to build up understanding and trust between both sides and push for further progress of bilateral relations.
