Assistant Foreign Minister Lv Guozeng Visits Egypt

On April 20, 2005, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Lv Guozeng, who was visiting Egypt, met respectively with Secretary-General Moussa of the League of Arab States (LAS), Foreign Minister Geit of Egypt, and the Assistant Minister for Multinational Relations of the Egyptian foreign ministry as well as other important government officials in Cairo. He also invited representatives of Arab states to LAS to have working lunch together, making an in-depth exchange of views on strengthening China-Egypt and China-Arab cooperative relations within the framework of China-Arab Cooperative Forum.

During the meeting with Secretary-General Moussa of the League of Arab States (LAS), Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Lv Guozeng firstly introduced the First Entrepreneurs Conference of Chin-Arab States Cooperation Forum, which was just concluded. He pointed out that representatives from most Arab states actively participated in the conference and successfully signed economic and trade agreements with many Chinese entrepreneurs. The success of the conference has greatly enhanced the economic and trade cooperation between China and Arab states and injected new vitality into the development of the friendly and cooperative relations in various fields between China and Arab states. In addition, the Senior Officials Meeting of China-Arab Cooperation Forum will be held in June in Beijing. Both sides will carry out consultations on such issues as how to further develop China-Arab relations within the framework of China-Arab Cooperation Forum. These are the substantial results brought about by China-Arab Cooperation Forum. Assistant Foreign Minister Lv emphasized that the Arab states are the important cooperation partners of China. China will, as always, make its contribution to further China-Arab relations with most Arab states. Secretary-General Moussa praised China's efforts in developing China-Arab relations and expressed that the LAS will work together with the Chinese side to boost the further development of China-Arab relations.

During the meeting with Foreign Minister Geit, Assistant Foreign Minister Lv expressed that in recent year, China and Egypt maintained frequent high-level contacts. In 2004, President Hu Jintao made a successful visit to Egypt. With the joint efforts by both sides, China-Egypt relations have been developing rapidly. Both countries support each other, harmonize each other's positions and maintain the close cooperation and consultations in international and regional affairs. The Chinese government sings high praise for and sincerely thanks the Egyptian government for upholding one-China policy, especially its firm support of the Anti-secession Law passed by the NPC of China not long ago. Assistant Foreign Minister Lv emphasized that no other countries and people in the world are more eager to realize the reunification of the country through peaceful means than China and the Chinese people. While striving to enhance the peaceful reunification, the Chinese government opposes any conducts by the separatist forces aimed at separating Taiwan from the Chinese territory gradually. In addition, the cooperation in economic and trade field between both Countries has witnessed pleasing achievements and the bilateral trade volume continues to grow in recent year. China-Arab Cooperation Forum formally launched in 2004 has brought new opportunities for the development of China-Egypt relations. It is hoped that both countries will continue to maintain the sound cooperation and jointly boost the growth of bilateral relations. Foreign Minister Geit expressed that Egypt is the first country to acknowledge China among Arab and African countries. The two countries enjoy firm and friendly relations. He reaffirmed that the Egyptian government's consistent position on the Taiwan issue. He emphasized that Egypt will firmly support China's peaceful reunification course as always and further develop the existing friendly and cooperative relations with China in various fields as driven by China-Arab Cooperation Forum.

During Assistant Foreign Minister Lv 's meeting with Assistant Minister for Multinational Relations of the Egyptian foreign ministry, both sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations as well as international and regional hot issues of common such as Darfur of Sudan, Pakistan and Israel, Iraq, Iran and the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

While having the working lunch with representatives of Arab states to LAS, Assistant Foreign Minister Lv reviewed together with the representatives the pleasing development of China-Arab relations since the formal launching of China-Arab Cooperation Forum. Lv indicated that with the joint efforts by both sides, the trade volume between China and Arab reached US$ 37 billion last year and the cooperation in economy, trade and investment enjoys broad prospects. Representatives of Arab states positively commented on and sang high praise for China's consistent position of supporting the just cause of the people in Palestine and Arab states. They expressed their common wish of further developing Arab-China relations and discussed how to further the cooperation between the two sides in the future.
