Hu Jintao Meets with Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine

On the afternoon of April 12, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in the Great Hall of the People with Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine Vladimir Litvin.

Hu made positive remarks on the achievements scored in bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ukraine 13 years ago, appreciating the fact that Ukraine firmly upholds the one-China policy and gives priority to developing friendly cooperative relations with China.

Hu Jintao pointed out the Chinese government highly prioritizes the development of China-Ukraine relations, supports Ukraine to safeguard its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and respects the development path chosen the Ukrainian people themselves based on the reality of their country. He said despite any changes in the international landscape, we would firmly pursue friendly policies to Ukraine. China would like to join hands with Ukraine to constantly deepen bilateral traditional friendship and enhance exchanges and cooperation in various fields on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence to uplift bilateral relations to a new level.

Litvin indicated that Ukraine will continue to pursue the policy of developing comprehensive friendly relations with China, and expand bilateral cooperation in various fields on the basis equality and reciprocity so as to benefit both peoples.

He said Ukraine firmly pursues the one-China policy and will strictly abide by its commitments on the Taiwan issue enshrined in bilateral political documents to support the reunification cause of the Chinese people. He hoped that the parliaments of Ukraine and China could enhance exchanges so as to boost the already sound friendly cooperative relations between the two countries.
